The Newt in Somerset is back, back, back!

Anyone who is anyone - and some people who are no-one at all - knows Bruton’s where it’s at. This cute-as-a-chocolate-button town in Somerset’s bucolic heartland has seen its creds soar in the past year or several, what with its high street teeming with must-have quirk (Caro, Alchemy, Phillips & Skinner) and punchy restaurants (Matt’s Kitchen, At The Chapel) and, five minutes out of town the total game-changer, Durslade Farmhouse from art power couple Hauser & Wirth, which gave Bruton a big ol’ showbiz rubber stamp when it opened in 2014.

But wind your way that little bit further and you’ll get to The Newt, the pinch-yourself Georgian retreat that got all the right tongues wagging when it opened last August. Now, having been all shuck up by Covid, this honey-coloured stunner has reopened for reduced-capacity stays, and for those in a day-tripping frame of mind the acres of private gardens are open daily from 9am till 6pm, 9pm on Thursdays. The hotel will also rustle up the chicest of picnics because, when in Somerset…

Room rates from £275 per night based on two sharing on a B&B basis, including a mini larder as well as access to the gardens and estate. Minimum stay of two nights to encourage fewer room changeovers
